Neviodunum. Naval base.
NEVIODUNUM (Drnovo) Yugoslavia. City 6 km to the S of the present town of Krško, on a dry tributary of the Sava. Although archaeology shows the region of Lower Carniola, in which Neviodunum is located, to have been heavily populated from prehistoric times, the city itself was, as its name indicates, a new Celtic foundation of commercial character. Its economic basis was the river traffic. The city was associated with the Celtic tribe of the Latobici. Excavations have uncovered rich necropoleis along the roads to Emona and Siscia and in the dry tributary of the Sava have revealed the quay and large warehouses (both preserved). In the area of the W suburb ceramics workshops and a factory producing earthen water pipes have been discovered. The extent of the city (ca. 300 x 100 m) is known, as is the water supply system, the spring and cistern for which are on hillocks to the SE. The plan of the city is not known in detail. It received municipal status from Vespasian. Its fertile ager is still known for its richness. In late antiquity the fortress of Velike Malence was built 10 km to the SE to guard against entry from the W into the plain around the city. The fortress, which includes an early church, is partly preserved. [www.perseus.tufts.edu] Drnovo (German: Dernowo) is a village south of Leskovec in the Municipality of Krško in eastern Slovenia. It lies just north of the motorway from Ljubljana to Zagreb. The area was traditionally part of Lower Carniola. It is now included with the rest of the municipality in the Lower Sava statistical region. Drnovo is the site of the Ancient Roman town of Neviodunum. It was a settlement of the Celtic tribe Latobici and in AD 79 it was granted municipal rights and became Municipium Flavium Latobicorum Neviodunum. It had an excellent location as a river port on the Sava River along the main Roman road connecting Emona and Siscia. The settlement was abandoned in the late 4th or early 5th century. Remains of the settlement, the port, roads, and thermae have been excavated and are now an open air museum. Predhodne prebivalce tega področja, keltske Latobike, so s pomočjo trgovine, diplomacije in vojaške sile priključili Rimskemu imperiju.
